Photography 101 – Ask Away

photography 101Instead of writing a giant photography 101 post about everything I think you need to know I figured it might be easier to just ask for your questions and then update this post with the question and the answer.  Just leave me a comment and I’ll have the answer up within 24 hours.  Below are a few sample questions that I’m guessing people might ask along with the answers.

  • JPEG vs RAW Files – My camera shoots RAW files and JPEG, what’s the difference and which should I use? This is a great question!  First lets explain the difference between RAW and JPEG.  When you shoot a photo as a JPEG the camera does a lot of in-camera processing to the file such as changing the colors, saturation, noise reduction, and any other things the camera thinks will make the photo better.  When you shoot in RAW the file you get is exactly how it was captured by the camera without any modifications done.  Sometimes these will look a little dull, but the advantage is you can apply any setting later without damaging the file.  One example would be the white balance…you can easily make the photo look warmer or cooler in tone.  It’s important to remember that you will need a program that can edit RAW files in order to take advantage of their extra editing capabilities and they are larger in size.  If you have the hard drive space I’d recommend shooting RAW + JPEG to get the best of both worlds.
  • I recently wrote an entire portrait photography tips article.  Check it out.

Alright, your turn to help turn this into a great post covering everything photography 101.  As I said above, post your questions in the comments and I’ll do the best to answer within 24 hours.
